What is psychosis?
Psychosis a mental condition characterized by a distorted perception of reality. People experiencing psychosis may have symptoms such as hallucinations (false sensory experiences, such as hearing voices that do not exist) and delusions (unrealistic and fixed beliefs that are at odds with reality). Psychosis can also affect the thought patterns and emotions of a person.
Causes of psychosis?
There are various causes of psychosis, including mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Other causes may include substance abuse, medical conditions, or traumatic stress.
Signs of psychosis?
Signs of psychosis can vary depending on the individual and the cause of the condition. Some common symptoms and signs of psychosis include:
- Hallucinations: This may include auditory hallucinations (auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices or sounds that others cannot hear), visual hallucinations (visual hallucinations, such as seeing things or people that are not present), or other forms of sensory disturbances.
- Delusions: These are fixed and unrealistic beliefs that are at odds with reality. People with psychosis may have delusions about persecution, grandiosity, jealousy, or other themes.
- Disturbed thought process: Changes in thinking and thought processes can include thought disorders that make it difficult for the person to maintain logical coherence in their thoughts. This can lead to unclear and incoherent thoughts.
- Changes in emotions and mood: People with psychosis may experience intense emotional fluctuations, such as apathy, restlessness, fear or anger.
- Social and interpersonal difficulties: Psychosis can affect a person’s ability to function socially and interact with other people. This can lead to withdrawal from social situations.
- Altered behaviour: People with psychosis may display unusual or disorganized behaviour, which may include agitation, restlessness or isolation.
- Cognitive impairment: Some people with psychosis may experience impaired cognitive function, including problems with attention, memory and concentration.
